In Lithuania open discussions about sexuality and sexual orientation are still controversial. It is the most sensitive issue in many societies. However, it is necessary to talk about it. In particular due to the fact that sexual identity, emotions about that are characterized each of person. Also, the public welfare is dependent on the welfare, security and respect of each person.
The main feature of Western culture is humanity and human’s assessment. States in the West live for person, according the rule “it is all about you”. The purpose of state is to serve to the people, to take care of one’s security, welfare and to hear one’s opinion. Consequently, it is necessary to follow the democratic values and human rights, whether the hatred for homosexuals shows the lack of awareness of human rights. Tradicionally, in Western culture, homosexual acts were condemned and punished. On the other hand, the legislation of many countries prospects the rights of homosexuals, but lesbians and gays often face with discrimination.
Sexual orientation is often defined as person’s emotional, romantic or sexual attraction to another person. Modern science no longer considers homosexuality or bisexuality than illness or perversion. All three sexual orientations are natural. Based on this they have to be recognized and understood.
According to Sigmund Freud, homosexuality is not really and advantage, but it does not a vice or degradation. S. Freud’s words are perfect for today. Being homosexuality in the XXI century “is not an advantage”. The sexual minorities are the one of the most discriminated society’s group without reason. In Lithuania homosexuality is often confused with pedophilia. While in other Western countries, homosexual couples can marry and adopt the children. However, in other countries homosexual people can’t do it. In the year 2008 European Court of Human Rights held that the ban on adoption per person for his orientation is discriminatory. But also in Belgium, Holland, UK it is available to same sex couples to artificial insemination.
Despite this fact homosexual parenting cause a lot of discussions. For example, wouldn’t the homosexual parents are suitable to raise children. It is said, that homosexual are infertile because of their lifestyle, they can not naturally have children, homosexual’s lifestyle is hedonistic, so it is not suitable for growing children.
According to critics, in the heterosexual families there are transmit the gender models, and on this way child psyche and communication skills are developing. Moreover, the children, whose are raising in the homosexual families, will experience the hate and bullying. Despite this studies indicate that the children’s development is influenced by educational quality, parents psychological well-being, positive family relationships, relationship’s harmony between the parents, but not the parent’s sex orientations, gender, sexuality or marital status.
According to the reasoned opinion, that homosexuality or bisexuality is a natural feature of a person there is a question – how to legally protect the legitimate interests of those persons. If homosexual relationships are treated as a normal relationship between two people is it suitable the same legal protection as heterosexual relationships? For example, can homosexual couples legally formalize their relationship. According to the values of democracy we can not tolerate any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation. Wages, the same work-time conditions, career prospects, ability-unability to start the family shouldn’t depend on the sexual orientation, identity, disability or gender.
